Wrestling With Issues

Coach Ozzie Ramos and Captain Luke Olk are looking to improve on their success last year with another strong season.  Compared to their blazing 13-0 start last year, their success has dipped by starting off 7-5 this season. Key members from the team this year are Luke Olk, Thai Nguyen, and Tyler Stone.  Combined, the three have compiled and impressive 41 wins.  Also, Matt Karr, who suffered an early season knee injury, is hoping to come back strong and add to the success of the team.  Thai Nguyen and Luke Olk are both poised to make a strong run in the state tournament this year.  After speaking to Karr, he said, “Both coaches are chill, and bring a positive atmosphere to the team.”

Also, the team has had to overcome many challenges they did not face last year.  Key members quit, and some became academically ineligible.  Half of last year’s starters have not returned for 09-10 season.  As a result of this, younger wrestlers have had to step up and be a part of varsity before they were ready.

“Keeping everyone healthy and motivated will be the main focus to have a winning and enjoyable season,” said Coach Ramos.   The players have proven their motivation by working out in the off season and many participated in off-season clubs and camps.

Ramos’ outlook for the season is to follow the leadership of his seniors and to have his underclassmen keep improving with every match.  He believes Rockville can compete with any team in the state, and that the Rockville team will continue their strong success.
