Alice has returned to Wonderland but this time as a nineteen year old woman. Alice, once again, has stumbled down the rabbit hole. But this time she is leaving behind a life, that she feels, she does not belong in. Alice feels trapped in a world of etiquette and propriety that does not fit her. The day that Alice returns to Wonderland she is at a garden party where she is expected to accept a marriage proposal from a successful suitor. But when being asked for her hand in marriage, she is distracted by a white rabbit wearing a waistcoat that she sees near by, and rushes after it and then, as we all know, falls down a rabbit hole.

Much like the original Alice in Wonderland, Alice falls down the rabbit hole and finds herself in a room with a key as well as a drink that can make her smaller and a cake that can make her bigger. After retrieving the key and shirking down to the right size Alice unlocks the door and is in Wonderland.

Although Alice is years older, some parts of the movie do not defer from the original. Alice still finds the Drink Me potion, attends the Mad Hatters tea party, and confronts the Red Queen. Though the premise of the movie is the same Alice in Wonderland is still a movie worth the effort to go see. Director Tim Burton has added his own original take on Alice’s dream world, while still keeping the qualities that truly make it Alice in Wonderland, making it a whole other movie on its own.

With the success of 3D movies like Avatar and Alice in Wonderland we can expect more and more movies to be filmed in 3D or changed to 3D in post production, like in the case of Alice in Wonderland. But does 3D really enhance the audiences viewing experience? Everyone has their own opinions. Some feel that Alice in Wonderland did not need to be converted while others feel that the 3D effects fit this type of movie perfectly.

Flowers are blossoming, the sun is finally out, our winter jackets can go back in the closet, and most importantly, the NCAA men’s college basketball starts today. This is the best time of year all sports fans, especially those that follow college basketball. With all the parody this year throughout the nation, this year’s tournament could prove to be one of the most entertaining to date.

With the seedings this year, any team can make a strong run, but all the one seeds this year -Kansas, Kentucky, Duke, and Syracuse – have the potential to take the title back to campus. Other favorites that are not number one are Big Ten and Big East champions Ohio State and West Virginia.

Dark horses this year include Baylor, a strong team from the Big 12, and the pretty much unknown New Mexico who also received a three seed could make a strong run.

Along with every other tournament, this year is filled with teams who are on upset alert in the first round. Purdue’s star Robbie Hummel tore his ACL last month, and many people around the nation are now picking thirteenth seeded Siena to advance in that matchup. Twelfth seeded Cornell is another team that many people are looking to surprise Temple in the first round, and some, including myself, have them advancing to the Sweet 16 over Wisconsin. Another high seed that has a possibility to advance much farther than expected of them in the tournament is eleventh seeded San Diego State.

The one monumental difference that this tournament contains from past years is the absence of three perennial powerhouses. Arizona, Connecticut, and North Carolina were all left out of the bracket this year. All three universities had down years, and hopefully they can rebound and make the field next year.

However, the tournament will surely survive without them and be as intriguing as years past. Good luck to all who filled out a bracket, and to all those who want to rip their hair out when their National Championship team loses in the second round, remember that it is just a game.

The cheerleaders had a rough season. Unfortunately three of the team members did not get to finish the season, for various reasons. The team’s three captains were seniors Jamie Throwe and Chelsea Kurowski, and sophomore Megan McDonald.

“Being a captain is a big responsibility, but I like being looked up to,” said Kurowski, as she reflected at the end of the season.

When asked what the best part about being a captain, Jamie Throwe said, “I like to lead people toward our goals.”

One of those goals was the cheerleading competition at Windsor High School on February 27, 2010. Rockville started off the competition performing first. There were thirteen other high schools, three JV teams, one middle school, and twelve stunts groups. All of the cheerleading squads competed with normal tourines or stunting, cheering, and dancing. A stunt is when two people throw another girl, called the flyer, in the air. There wre also twelvegroups that solely competed with stunt routines, which do not focus on cheering or dance.

Rockville competed against Avon in the novice division and took first place. The Rams’ dance routine consisted of a mix of different songs that were edited and put together to create one fast-paced song. One of the hardest stunts was the pyramid, which all the cheerleaders are physically connected. Overall the competition was a great one. It gave the girls more confidence going into states in the beginning of March. BothThrowe and Kurowski agree that teamwork will lead the team to success in the comig weeks.

This year’s volleyball lock-in, hosted by the Peer Mediators, was one for the ages. For only costing seven dollars to get in, every one who attended got their money’s worth. Two-time champions Three-Peat looked to do exactly what their name said, win the lock-in for the thir year in a row. This year however, the field was as competitive as its ever been. Teams like Off Together in the Woods, RLB, Over one Billion Served, Already Lost, Flipadelphia, and the up and coming squad Rock Boyz all posed a threat. Senior Brian O’ Gara said, “This year the competition was the best I’ve ever seen.”

When the playoffs started, Off Together suffered an early 20-19 loss in the second round and went home disappointed. Junior Matt Falcetta, who was a member of Off Together said, “The loss was tough, and I’m heated that the other team did not have to win by two.” All other teams looked strong until Flipadelphia lost to Three-Peat in the quarterfinals. The Rock Boyz torched their side of the bracket and cruised to the finals. Three-Peat and Over One Billion Served met in the semifinals in the other half of the bracket. It was a long tough game, but in the upset of the decade, Over One Billion Served came out on top.

Over One Billion Served led by Justin Lipe, Kevin Anton, and Austin West did not have enough firepower to overtake the young, motivated squad of the Rock Boyz. Vince Desilets, Alex Caine, and Tavi Kelly played strong all night long and kept their stamina up throughout the long and grinding seven hour tournament.

The Rock Boyz look to be the favorite for next year, but hopefully the competition is just as strong which will make another great tournament.

The boy’s Rockville basketball team ended a tumultuous season with a rough loss to Fermi. It was a long hard fought game where defense was key. Seniors Brian O’ Gara and Jeremy Susi played consistently well all game long, and Saige Douglas added offense in crucial points of the game.

Rockville was playing from behind for most of the game, but a late fourth quarter surge aided their comeback and they tied the score at 42 in the closing seconds. Unfortunately, Fermi was able to make a layup with less than five seconds left, and Brian O’ Gara missed a half court shot to end the game. O’ Gara said, “I thought the shot had a chance, but it was just a prayer.”

Senior Bryant Davis also played shut down defense and hit a key three early in the game. The team was only able to notch three wins in a season where many players were kicked off the team for poor behavior and many others left that were unhappy with the team’s performance.

However, this troubled season is a sign of good things to come. Juniors Taylor Botteron, Michael Faniel, Ian MacDonald, and Jori Dumais who all came off the bench this year will lead the team next year. Also, the sophomore class has many promising young players that even saw varsity minutes this year. The class is led by Vincent “V-Nice” Desilets and Tyler Brough. Junior Talyor Botteron said, “I’m excited for next year, and the juniors and sophomores get along well so it should be a fun year.” The new look Rams will come back strong next year and look to turn around this years rough results.

This season, the Rams baseball team looks as strong as ever. With a plethora of upperclassmen leadership, the boys are looking to make the state tournament. The team looks to benefit from the recent conference change and capitalize on the new schedule. Junior outfielder Kevin Babcock said, “The new conference definitely favors us, and I hope we can get eight wins and qualify for the tournament.”

The team is predominately seniors this year and they should be able to provide a strong nucleus for the squad. Pitchers like Eric Chase and Chris Messenger are both returning starters that look to have a successful season. Also, pitcher Austin West is looking to have a break out year on the hill. On top of that, seniors Kevin Hatch and Steve Monaghan will provide consistent play on offense and defense for the team.

Juniors who are looking to thrive this season are Kevin Babcock, Bryan Leonard, and Patrick Witham. Kevin is a jet in the outfield, and his offensive performance rarely fluctuates. Bryan Leonard returns to the team after taking a year off last season. Leonard is a natural baseball player and will most likely return to his spot in the middle infield. Patrick Witham has anticipated the new season for a while and is already getting his work in with the pitchers and catchers.

All in all, the team has all the right ingredients to be successful this season, and hopefully that will translate into a spot in the state tournament.

Last year, the golf team’s season did not go according to plan. A key player was lost early in the season, and the squad never found its consistency. With new coach Mr. Stevenson at the helm, Rockville golf is looking for a turnaround. A change has also been made to the CCC East, so Rockville will being facing new schools, and they hope to thrive in their new division.

A combination of good young players and senior leadership will be the formula for success this spring. Joe Philbrick leads the senior class as the best returning player and looks to keep his scores below 40 this year. Bobby Waggonner and Ben Stokes are other returning senior varsity players. They look to remain consistent throughout the year and keep their scores under 45. Tim Chepeleff, a junior varsity player last year, looks to pad the strength of the senior class and looks to continue his good playing from the end of last year.

Juniors Brian Goff and Andrew Nisbet look to solidify the lineup for the RHS golf team this spring. Brian Goff has been a consistent varsity player since becoming a freshman and he and Joe Philbrick will need to be on top of their game all season long for Rockville to strive. Andrew Nisbet came on strong as a sophomore last season and played a few matches with the varsity team. This year he will be working hard to see more time as he and Brian Goff have a friendly rival that keep the pair motivated.

All the parts are in place for the Rockville team to have a successful season, it is just a matter of executing. If everyone maintains their focus, and plays their role the team could be on their way to a great year. “Winning record or not, we always have a great time out on the course,” Ben Stokes said.

The town of Vernon’s Ski trip is starting up again this January. A five week program where students in grades 8-12 get a chance to go up to Massachusetts and do some night skiing. The mountain that you travel to every week is Berkshire East; also know as the “Beast of the East.” Although not a very large mountain, it is always a fun time going down the same trails with all of your close friends.

Ski trip is talked about year around by those who take part in the event.

“I start preparing for next year after the last one starts,” says a four year veteran of the trip, Bobby Waggoner.

Not the best skier or snowboarder? That doesn’t mean that you don’t have a chance to go on the trip. There are different rates that cover different packages for this trip. For example, you can get a deal where you have lessons and rentals for around $300 dollars. If you don’t need lessons and just rentals there is a deal for that too. Don’t need lessons or rentals? Then you are paying the lowest price of around $200 dollars. All of these prices are flat rates that are paid once you sign up.

This fee also includes a bus ride up and back which is equally as fun as the skiing and snowboarding itself. They are coach buses where you can sit comfortably with all of your friends, eat as much as you want, and watch a good movie or two. Things have been known to get out of control once in a while but it’s all out of good fun.

Here are a couple of tips if this is your first time on the ski trip. First, bring your own food! They have a cafeteria there that serves delicious food, if you are willing to pay a lot of money. You are allowed to eat on the buses like I said before so if you want to just bring a couple dollars for a snack that is fine. Just don’t rely on their cafeteria if you’re trying to save some pennies.

Also, dress as warm as possible! In case you weren’t aware this is the middle of winter. Not only that but it is night time when you are skiing or snowboarding down these slopes. Goggles, a face-mask, gloves, jackets, and snow pants are a must if you want to avoid frost bite.

“Hand warmers and under armor are what help me stay warm every Friday night,” says Jenna Poist, a third year veteran of the trip.

Last but not least, make sure you are always with a friend. Being out on a mountain like Berkshire East, it is very easy to get lost. If you are with someone it will reduce the chance of getting lost. Also if you get hurt, being with someone will make it easier to notify ski patrol and get you to safety faster.

If you keep all this in mind than you will have some of the best Friday nights of your life. The memories will stick around for years to come and if you’re lucky you’ll make a new friend or two out there. If you’re too late this year, but are still interested come November 2010 you can sign up at the building located in the center of Henry Park.

Have fun and happy skiing!

very year, practically the entire student body plus tons of alumni pile in to the auditorium to watch one talented senior boy get crowned Mr. Rockville High School. As usual the annual pageant did not disappoint. Kevin Anton, Patrick Crane, Kyle DeCarli, Nathan Ouellette, Timothy Smith, Jeff Stone, Jesse Sullivan, Mike Tucker, and Claude Ziehbrunner all competed with hopes of getting the title.

After the contestants had entered with their lovely escorts the show opened up with the nine contestants shimmying and schmoozing to win the audiences and judges’ affection. The boys all moved in step with one another to a dance choreographed by three escorts. Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” and Beyoncé’s “Diva” set the mood for their incredible pizzazz and flashy jazz hands.

The next portion of the evening’s entertainment was Swimwear. While Jeff Stone ran Baywatch-style across the stage, Patrick Crane burned under the intense lighting, and Timothy Smith paraded around in a bikini top and itty bitty shorts. Claude Ziehbrunner played up his status as the Swiss exchange student by coming out in a full snow suit, snowboard in hand. It was definitely not a sight seen every day.

Though the previous segments had been crowd pleasers, nothing is ever as anticipated as much as the Talent bits. Kevin Anton’s act was definitely one to be remembered; a fully choreographed dance and skit where boys wore Jabbawockeez-esque masks. Nathan Ouellette impressed everyone by playing his violin and stomping out a beat with his fiddle. Jesse Sullivan showed off his musical skills as he played “Slow Dancing in a Burning Room” by John Mayer on his guitar, and Mike Tucker did a contemporary dance. The act that brought down the house, however, was Kyle DeCarli’s. The contestant teamed up with Preston Coombs for a duet dance to “Beauty and the Beast” from the Disney flick. DeCarli donned a tutu and tiara as Coombs wore a giant furry mask; the pair pirouetted and leaped into the judges’ hearts for sure.

“The competition was tough this year and everyone did extremely well.” Kevin Anton, one of the stand out contestants commented on the Talent section, “My favorite talent to watch was Nate playing his violin.”

The Question portion consists of the contenders picking two questions out of two different hats; one silly and one serious. Each boy answered his question to the best of his ability, as this section is often seen as the one that makes or breaks the judges’ final decision which comes directly after.

As we all waited anxiously for the crowning, Mike Stankiewicz and Mike Wieliczka (commonly known as “Mike and Mike” our phenomenal RHS MC team) kept us entertained as they had during every section break. These two helped the audience laugh through every lull in the show; Stankiewicz even led the crowd in what has become a trademark of his, “The Rollercoaster.” The boys were awesome additions to the show.

Finally, it was time for the results. Contestants and escorts lined up on stage as Mike and Mike listed the prizes and started the awards. Ouellette was named second runner up and Ziehbrunner was named first runner up, and the winner of the title of Mr. RHS 2010 was (drum roll please) Kyle Decarli! The audience, as well as all those on stage, cheered for the boys and the night ended on a cheerful note.

Sullivan claimed he would do the show again “in a heartbeat” and continued to say, “It was a great time.” Though DeCarli ended up with the crown, all the boys put on a fantastic show which really made them all winners.

The Pep Rally at Rockville High School was something that all of the students looked forward to. Walking through the hallway you could hear the cheerleaders, band members, dance team, and the step team talking about their performance they would make during block four. As for the rest of us, we were just happy to get out of class.

English teacher Ms. Matyseck enjoyed the event. “I was surprised at how well it went this year. I was impressed with the dance team, step team, and cheerleaders. I thought that the students were well behaved considering being in the auditorium,” she explained. Other teachers agreed with Ms. Matyseck. “It was much better then last years,” said Mrs. Reilly, a Childhood Education teacher. Although the Pep Rally turned out great, Mrs. Reilly explained that she was confused because, “[the Pep Rally] was never announced. Teachers didn’t know what was going on.” When asked about what she would have changed about the Pep Rally, Mrs. Reilly explains “ I would have really liked to have heard each player introduced individually. Also, they could have mixed it up a little. Maybe first off, they could have them dance and cheer, then introduce the players. Overall, I really enjoyed it.”

Of the event’s two emcees Mike and Mike, Senior Preston Combs said, “Both Mikes did a really good job. I think that they could have made it so the audience was a little bit more into it and included. But otherwise I think it turned out pretty good.”
